The Newport Beach City Arts Commission took up artwork placement, a new poetry contest and policy updates at its Thursday, Aug. 13, meeting, held during the city's inaugural Art Week.

Staff and subcommittee members recommended the seven-member commission approve reframing six pieces of art for placement at Marina Park and two pieces for the Mariners Library. The Art in Public Places Ad Hoc Subcommittee, staffed by commissioners David Anastos and Tiare Meegan, brought the recommendation forward as agenda item 26-2707.

The same subcommittee also asked the commission to approve eight "Ballerina Series" paintings by artist Elena Kealy for display in the Central Library Lobby Gallery Space while rejecting her remaining additional submissions, according to the meeting agenda packet.

The Music and Live Entertainment Ad Hoc Subcommittee recommended the commission approve a City Poetry Contest in 2027. Winning poets would be invited to read their work at the 60th Annual Newport Beach Art Exhibition, the milestone edition of the city's juried art competition. The subcommittee is staffed by Secretary Heather Ignatin, Chair Vanessa Moore and Vice Chair Cory Glass.

The commission also reviewed City Council Policy A-2, which governs fundraising procedures and donor plaques for artwork. Staff recommended discussion but no specific action on the policy item.

Official vote tallies from the Aug. 13 meeting have not yet been posted. All four items were listed for "review and possible action" on the agenda.

The meeting took place at the Civic Center Council Chambers with all seven commissioners present: Moore, Glass, Ignatin, Anastos, John Blom, Meegan and Laurel Tippett. Library Services Director Melissa Hartson, Library Services Manager Rebecca Lightfoot and Cultural Arts Assistant Camille Escareal-Garcia staffed the session.

Art Week runs Aug. 9–15, opening with a free Pacific Symphony concert on the Civic Center Green and closing Saturday, Aug. 15, with the 59th Annual Newport Beach Art Exhibition featuring more than 300 works.
