Ben & Jerry's will celebrate its Fashion Island location with a grand opening and ribbon cutting on Thursday, Sept. 17, at the mall's Atrium Food Court.

The Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting the ceremony. Steve Rosansky, president and CEO of the Chamber, leads the organization putting on the event. The ribbon cutting begins at 5 p.m. at 401 Newport Center Dr. and runs until 6 p.m., according to the Chamber's event listing.

The scoop shop is open. Ben & Jerry's lists a full menu for the Newport - Fashion Island location on its website, and the shop occupies Unit A102 in the Atrium Court. The Sept. 17 ceremony marks the formal grand opening.

Social media accounts tied to the location have made competing claims about the shop's significance for Orange County. One post calls it "the first and ONLY Ben & Jerry's in Orange County in over 8 years." A separate post labels it "Orange County's First Ben and Jerry's Scoop Shop." The two accounts differ on whether the shop is the county's first ever or its first in more than eight years, and no official statement from the company clarifies the distinction.

The opening fits a pattern of new food tenants arriving at Fashion Island this fall. Levain Bakery opened at 315 Newport Center Dr. on Friday, Sept. 4. Teleféric Barcelona opened at 311 Newport Center Dr. in August. Ben & Jerry's adds a nationally known ice cream brand to the Atrium Food Court lineup alongside those newcomers.

The ribbon cutting is free and open to the public. Residents can head to the Atrium Food Court at 401 Newport Center Dr. on Sept. 17 at 5 p.m.
