Newport Beach Mayor Lauren Kleiman will read a proclamation marking what organizers say is the 100th anniversary of Pacific Coast Highway's grand opening at the 9th Annual Cars and Coffee show on Saturday, Sept. 12, in Corona del Mar.

The free event, hosted by Friends of OASIS at the OASIS Senior Citizen Center, 801 Narcissus Ave., draws classic car owners and spectators each year for a morning of chrome, coffee and donuts. This year's centennial proclamation elevates what has become one of the neighborhood's signature gatherings.

The show opens to the public at 8 a.m., with the trophy presentation at 10:30 a.m. Car participants check in at 7 a.m.

Co-sponsored by Five Crowns, the Corona del Mar steakhouse that has anchored East Coast Highway since 1965, the show will also feature a visit from the OC Model A Club.

Past winners worth watching for

The event has produced some eye-catching hardware over the years. A cream-colored 1957 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, complete with matching Mercedes luggage and valued at more than $1 million, took Best of Show honors at last year's edition. A 1961 pink custom Buick Invicta has been a consistent crowd favorite across multiple shows.

Friends of OASIS, which supports programs at the center for older adults, has held the Cars and Coffee event annually since 2019, skipping only 2020. According to Stu News Newport, the PCH centennial proclamation will mark 100 years since the highway's grand opening.
