Newport Beach-based Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian will open four new clinical buildings at its Irvine campus in September, completing the $1.2 billion Sun Family Campus and adding 155 inpatient beds, 11 operating rooms and roughly 1,000 jobs to Orange County's healthcare system.

The four facilities, dedicated to women's health, cancer and digestive health, cap a six-building campus that broke ground in 2023, according to the Orange County Business Journal. A surgical pavilion, the campus's first phase, opened earlier this summer. The September opening also brings 120,000 square feet of ambulatory facilities and two additional procedure rooms to Hoag's Irvine footprint, OCBJ reported.

Irvine-based LPA Design Studios, Orange County's largest architectural firm by billings, served as lead architect on the project. The new buildings feature outdoor courtyards designed to bring natural light and open air into patient areas.

"Hoag is a huge project, so that has been something we've been working toward," LPA chief executive Wendy Rogers told the Business Journal on Aug. 24. "For the team and for us all to see that come to fruition is tremendous."

Named for a family gift

The campus honors David and Diana Sun, co-founders of Kingston Technology, who made two $50 million gifts to Hoag in 2022 and 2025. Their daughter, Dara Sun Mullarkey, told the Business Journal in 2023 that Hoag's treatment of her grandmother inspired the donations.

The nonprofit hospital system, ranked No. 1 in Orange County by U.S. News & World Report, operates two hospitals, 18 urgent care facilities and 13 health and wellness centers with more than 9,000 employees. Hoag president and CEO Robert Braithwaite has called the expansion a way to "significantly expand care in Newport Beach" and across the region.

Hiring push and fundraising

The expansion is expected to add approximately 1,000 new jobs. Caroline Pereira, president of the Hoag Hospital Foundation, said in February that the system is recruiting nurses, technicians and essential staff from across the country to fill positions and retain existing caregivers.

Hoag's "Boldly Hoag" philanthropic campaign had raised $250 million of its $300 million goal as of February, with the hospital aiming to close the gap by September. A separate $30 million gift from Ron and Sandi Simon is funding workforce housing tied to the campus growth, according to a Hoag press release.

What's next

The exact September opening date has not been announced. Hoag is also building a separate addiction treatment center on its Newport Beach campus, which broke ground in October 2025 and is expected to open in 2027.
