The Hollywood Vampires documentary "Unleashed Spirits" will close the 27th annual Newport Beach Film Festival with its West Coast premiere at the Lido Theater.

The screening is set for 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, according to the festival's programming announcement. Director Daniel E. Catullo III, band members and executive producer Paul Geary are scheduled to attend. A Q&A session will follow the film.

"Unleashed Spirits" traces the Hollywood Vampires from their origins as a secret 1970s drinking club led by Alice Cooper to their evolution into a touring arena act. The band features Cooper, Johnny Depp, Joe Perry and Tommy Henriksen.

The name came from a waitress.

In the film's trailer, as Yahoo Entertainment reported, Cooper recounts how a server at the group's regular Hollywood haunt delivered the line that stuck: "Every night you guys come in here, I only see you at night and all you do is drink. You're like a bunch of vampires."

"Unleashed Spirits" won the Best Documentary Film Award at the 42nd Boston Film Festival. The film had its world premiere Sept. 18 at the Boch Center Wang Theatre, according to the festival's awards announcement. That screening included a Q&A with Cooper, Perry, Henriksen and Catullo, moderated by SiriusXM host Eddie Trunk.

Catullo, a multiple Emmy Award winner who lives in Orange County, runs 10 Lives Studios LLC, a production company with offices in Los Angeles, New York City, Nashville and London. His Emmy-winning documentaries include "Breathe, Nolan, Breathe" (2020), "45 Mill Street" (2023) and "Death of a Pledge" (2024), according to his official website.

The NBFF designation for "Unleashed Spirits" is Special Event Closing Night Documentary Feature. The festival's main Closing Night film is "Behemoth!" The festival, led by CEO Gregg Schwenk, runs Oct. 15–22 and draws more than 50,000 attendees, according to Variety.
