New York City's Levain Bakery will open its first Orange County location at Fashion Island in early September, bringing the chain's signature six-ounce cookies to Newport Beach.

The bakery will set up at 315 Newport Center Drive, Suite 315, near Macy's and Sushi Roku, according to the Orange County Register. Fashion Island's directory already lists the space as "Coming Soon."

Co-founders Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald said in a joint statement Aug. 11 that the Newport Beach location feels like a natural next step after the success of their LA bakeries, and that they can't wait to open at Fashion Island.

The Newport Beach shop will be Levain's fourth in California, joining locations in Beverly Hills, Larchmont Village and Venice. It will also be the company's 20th bakery nationwide, spanning eight states.

Weekes and McDonald founded Levain in 1995 as a small bread shop on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The signature cookies came about while the two were training for an Ironman Triathlon. They needed a high-calorie post-workout snack, so they baked oversized chocolate chip walnut cookies and started selling them at the shop.

They sold out immediately.

Each cookie weighs six ounces and is crispy on the outside, gooey in the center. The Fashion Island menu will include Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip Walnut, Oatmeal Raisin, Raspberry Pistachio, Caramel Coconut Chocolate Chip and Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip.

Beyond cookies, the location will serve breads, muffins, pastries and sandwiches. A full coffee bar will offer cappuccinos, lattes, matcha, cold-foam drinks and Levain's Cookie Milk Latte. Everything is baked fresh on-site daily, according to the company, and unsold items are donated to local charities each night.

No exact opening date within September has been announced. The company and multiple reports describe the timeline as "early September."
