NBPD hosts mobile cafe at Crystal Cove Sept. 12

Newport Beach police officers will meet residents over coffee at Crystal Cove Shopping Center on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the department's next Mobile Cafe.

The Newport Beach Police Department (NBPD) announced the event on Patch. It runs from 10 a.m. to noon at the shopping center, located at 7845 East Coast Highway. Residents can meet officers, ask questions about the department's work and raise neighborhood concerns. No registration is required.

A program now in its fourth year

The NBPD launched the Mobile Cafe series in July 2022, according to a city news release at the time. The program has returned to Crystal Cove Shopping Center multiple times since.

In a program description published in September 2024, the department said the cafe offers relaxed, one-on-one interaction and a chance for residents to ask questions, raise concerns or get to know officers. The department noted that most contact between police and the public happens during emergencies or emotional situations, making those moments poor opportunities for relationship-building.

Past editions have been held in partnership with the Irvine Company and local vendors including Blk Dot Coffee and Zpizza, according to the Newport Beach Indy. Partners for the Sept. 12 event have not been announced.

Summer outreach continues

The cafe follows a busy stretch of community outreach for the department. NBPD drew hundreds of residents to its National Night Out celebration at Bonita Canyon Sports Park on Aug. 4, the Newport Beach Indy reported. That event featured displays from the department's CSI unit, SWAT team, K-9 team, Mounted Unit and its new drone program.
