Newport Beach families looking to get rid of an e-bike or e-motorcycle now have a financial incentive to do so.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office will host a buyback event Sunday, Sept. 13 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, offering gift cards worth $200 to $1,000 in exchange for e-bikes, e-motorcycles, e-scooters and pocket bikes. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2000 E. Gene Autry Way.

Spokesperson Kimberly Edds told the Orange County Register that the program is the first known e-bike buyback of its kind in the nation, Patch reported. Gift card values depend on the vehicle's class. Cards come from Target, Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods. Both working and non-working vehicles will be accepted, no questions asked.

Quantities are limited and available first-come, first-served. The first 75 people will also receive two Los Angeles Angels game tickets.

The gift cards are funded through asset forfeiture funds, according to the Los Angeles Times. The DA's office modeled the program after police gun buyback events.

District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement that the vehicles are dangerous and increasingly deadly, and that the office is doing everything possible to protect lives.

The buyback arrives as Newport Beach intensifies its own e-bike crackdown. On Feb. 24, Newport Beach police deployed nine motor officers and two patrol units near Newport Harbor High School and Ensign Intermediate. That operation produced 46 e-bike stops, 37 citations under municipal code violations that took effect in January and three impounded e-bikes. Two juveniles were arrested on felony evasion charges after fleeing on electric motorcycles, according to the Balboa Island Improvement Association.

Newport-Mesa Unified School District added another layer for the 2026-27 school year. Under Board Policy BP 5142.04, all students in grades TK through eighth are banned from bringing e-bikes or e-motos onto school property. High schoolers may ride e-bikes to campus after completing safety training, but e-motos remain prohibited for all students.

The urgency is backed by data. Children's Hospital of Orange County recorded 201 e-bike trauma activations in 2025, up from one in 2021, according to Voice of OC. A UC San Diego study found e-bike riders were involved in at least 4,035 collisions statewide between 2018 and 2024.

At a community meeting in Seal Beach on Aug. 3, Spitzer said the DA's office had more than two dozen open investigations into parents of children suspected of riding e-bikes or e-motorcycles illegally, Patch reported. Four prosecutions had already been filed.

No registration is required. Residents can bring vehicles directly to Angel Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 13.
