Newport Harbor girls' volleyball holds the No. 4 spot in the Orange County Top 10 after winning the Durango Fall Classic Bronze Division and beating two Sunset League opponents.

The Sailors (23-5) dropped one spot from No. 3 despite rattling off five wins in eight days. Corona del Mar (17-4) slid from No. 9 to No. 10 after road losses to Newport Harbor and Los Alamitos in league play, according to the OC Register's rankings published Monday, Sept. 21.

Newport Harbor's week started with a four-set Battle of the Bay win at Corona del Mar on Monday, Sept. 14. The Sailors lost the opening set 16-25 before rallying to win the next three 25-21, 25-21, 25-19, as reported by the Daily Pilot. Piper Coady, an Indiana commit, led with 16 kills and four aces. Ella Olson, committed to Texas, added 15 kills and two aces. Morgan Starkenburg, a Pepperdine commit, matched Olson's 15 kills without a single hitting error and added three solo blocks.

Sophomore setter Avery Hansen dished out 45 assists in that match, filling in after starter Kinsley LaBonty was lost for the season with a ligament tear in her foot.

The Sailors then beat Huntington Beach in Sunset League action before heading to Las Vegas for the Durango Fall Classic. In the Bronze Division bracket, Newport Harbor topped Mercy 26-24, 25-23 and Corona del Sol 23-25, 25-22, 25-19 before beating Kamehameha Kapalama 25-18, 20-25, 25-22 in the championship match Saturday, Sept. 19.

Starkenburg had predicted the Las Vegas trip would sharpen the team. "I think we just have a pattern of maybe coming out a little slow, maybe not with that confidence that's so important," she told the Daily Pilot on Sept. 16. "I'm hoping that in Vegas, when we play those high-level teams … that'll help us back at home."

Three wins in the desert followed.

Corona del Mar's loss at Newport Harbor was followed by a defeat at Los Alamitos, the Sunset League leader at 19-5 and 6-0 in league. Those two road losses dropped the Sea Kings one spot to No. 10.

Los Alamitos sits at No. 3 in the county and beat Newport Harbor in four sets two weeks ago, making the Griffins the team to catch in the Sunset League's second half. Unbeaten Mater Dei holds the No. 1 ranking at 23-0 after winning the Durango Championship Division.

Newport Harbor travels to Edison (8-11), ranked No. 9 in the county, for a Sunset League match at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23.
