Newport Landing Whale Watching will hand out a free child's whale-watching pass for every bag of trash volunteers collect at its Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 19.

The event runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the company's office at 309 Palm St., Suite A, in Newport Beach, Stu News Newport reported. No advance sign-up is required.

Volunteers check in at a table in front of the office, fill out a liability form and grab a 10-gallon trash bag and latex gloves provided by Newport Landing. Participants who bring back a bag at least half full receive one free child's standard whale-watching pass.

Newport Landing encourages volunteers to bring their own five-gallon reusable bucket, garden gloves, trash grabbers, sun protection and water.

The cleanup falls on the same day as the 42nd annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, which the California Coastal Commission calls the state's largest annual volunteer event. The statewide effort runs from 9 a.m. to noon, though Newport Landing's hours extend through 4 p.m.

The event is timed to an active stretch of whale season off the coast. In mid-August, Newport Landing posted that a well-known humpback named Chompers had returned with a new calf, traveling from Laguna to Newport alongside hundreds of dolphins, as the New York Post reported. Newport Landing said humpback and fin whales often remain in the area through November.
