Hundreds of families in red, white, and blue packed Balboa Boulevard on Saturday, July 4, as the Newport Beach Fire Department led a procession of decorated bikes, scooters, wagons, and strollers from 36th Street Park to Channel Place Park for the city's 15th Annual "4th of July is for Families" celebration.

The free event, organized by the city's Recreation and Senior Services Department, kicked off at 9 a.m. with the bike parade starting at West Balboa Boulevard and 36th Street. By 9:30 a.m., Channel Place Park had transformed into a carnival-style festival that ran until 11:30 a.m.

Kids lined up for an inflatable axe-throwing station, competed in tug-of-war matches, and spun hula hoops. A DJ quizzed children on Disney trivia, handing out Chronic Tacos gift cards to winners. The local chain also sold breakfast burritos on-site and donated additional gift cards as raffle prizes.

Newport Beach Mayor Lauren Kleiman noted the day's energy in a Monday, July 6, letter: "Newport Beach residents donned patriotic ensembles, children delighted in fire engine-led parades around the city and many enjoyed a banner day out on our harbor, in celebration of America's 250th."

Photos published by Stu News Newport on Monday, July 6, showed large crowds filling Channel Place Park. Residents of all ages showed off patriotic gear, and both adults and children competed for prizes throughout the morning.

City Manager Seimone Jurjis had invited families in a Monday, June 29, letter to dress in their best red, white, and blue and bring bikes, golf carts, or walking shoes to West Newport for the parade. The Newport Beach Police Department also sent an alert the morning of the event reminding residents of the route and timing.

Now in its 15th year, the tradition launched in 2012 as a neighborhood gathering on the Peninsula. It remains one of the city's signature family-friendly Independence Day events, with the 16th edition expected July 4, 2027.
