More than 30 decorated boats lit up Newport Harbor on a summer night in 1921, drawing what the Los Angeles Times called "the largest night crowd ever assembled at this popular resort." That spectacle, the 10th annual Illuminated Boat Parade, is the direct ancestor of today's Christmas Boat Parade.

The Newport Beach Historical Society spotlights the 1921 event in its August newsletter, published Wednesday, July 29. Written by archivist Jill Thrasher, the piece draws on a Los Angeles Times report dated Aug. 19, 1921, describing the parade as the most successful in its history.

From Balboa Pavilion to the yacht club

Billed as a "water carnival," the 1921 parade launched from the Balboa Pavilion and ended at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club. Floats, yachts, motorboats, rowboats, and canoes competed for trophies and prizes, with entries arriving from Balboa, Balboa Island, Newport Beach, and several inland cities.

Chairing the event was Joseph Allen Beek, founder of the Balboa Island Ferry. Beek had started the ferry service in 1919 with a vessel called The Ark, shuttling passengers between Balboa Island and the Balboa Peninsula for five cents a ride. The ferry remains the oldest continuously operated business in Newport Beach, according to The Log.

A tradition rooted in 1908

The lighted-boat tradition on Newport Harbor traces even further back. On July 4, 1908, Italian immigrant Giovanni "John" Scarpa strung Japanese lanterns on his gondola and led a procession through the harbor, according to Visit Newport Beach. That outing launched the summer Tournament of Lights, which eventually evolved into the Christmas Boat Parade.

If the 1921 parade was the 10th annual edition, the formal series dates to roughly 1912.

A photograph survives

The Historical Society preserves a photograph of the 1921 first-place float winner: the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce entry. The image, captioned "Louise in Newport Harbor, 1921," comes from the Sherman Library's Sawyer (Wilbur Cyrus) Photograph Collection.

The newsletter arrives as Newport Beach marks its 120th anniversary in 2026. The city incorporated in 1906 by a vote of 44 to 12.

The 118th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade runs Dec. 16–20, 2026, with more than 100 decorated vessels following a 14-mile course through the harbor. An estimated 1.5 million visitors watch each year.
