After five years selling nearly 800 artworks from a Westcliff Drive strip mall, Kennedy Contemporary is moving to one of Newport Beach's most walkable streets.

Owner Victoria Kennedy opened the gallery's new space at 323 Marine Ave. on Balboa Island on Sunday, July 6, with an inaugural exhibition featuring three Sausalito-based painters. The new space sits at street level on a corridor known for foot traffic from both year-round residents and summer visitors.

"As most entrepreneurs know, opening a business is an emotional roller coaster," Kennedy told the Newport Beach Independent. "We've sold nearly 800 artworks, worked with hundreds of wonderful collectors and visionary interior designers, and held thirty exhibitions."

Kennedy launched the original gallery in January 2021, during the pandemic, with a 50-page business plan and a bet that Newport Beach needed a dedicated contemporary art space. Five years and nearly 800 sales later, she's expanding. The gallery now represents 14 nationally and internationally recognized artists, according to its website.

Kennedy said Marine Avenue's growing mix of shops and restaurants aligns with her vision for the new location. The original Westcliff Drive space will remain open by appointment through the end of 2026.

The inaugural show

"Boundless Palette: Three Voices" features Leslie Allen, Terri Froelich, and Sharon Paster, all Sausalito-based painters whose work draws on the California landscape. One piece on display is Allen's collage "Road Distractions."

The gallery describes the trio as "the three notes of a musical triad," each contributing a distinct voice while creating visual harmony together.

The exhibition runs Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., through Friday, August 15. Visits are also available by appointment.

An opening night celebration is scheduled for Friday, July 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Balboa Island gallery.
