Project Adult Literacy, the Newport Beach program that has taught adults to read, write and speak English for four decades, will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a free public event on Thursday, Sept. 17 at the Civic Center Community Room.

Space is limited.

Advance registration is required by Tuesday, Sept. 1, due to venue capacity. Residents can register online through the Newport Beach Library literacy services page or by calling 949-717-3874.

The celebration runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with doors opening at 10 a.m., at 100 Civic Center, Newport Beach. The program will feature keynote remarks from alumni, recognition of outstanding learners, an international potluck brunch and the release of a special edition of "In Our Own Words," the program's learner anthology.

The event is timed to coincide with International Literacy Day, which UNESCO marks on Sept. 8 this year. The global observance turns 60 in 2026, and UNESCO estimates at least 739 million youth and adults worldwide still lack basic literacy skills.

Literacy coordinator Christina Smith said the milestone reflects the community's long investment in the program.

"We are thrilled to open our doors to the public for this milestone, and we encourage everyone who believes in the power of literacy to secure their spot early," Smith said in an Aug. 10 announcement.

The event is open to community members, supporters, volunteers and local leaders. Residents interested in joining as a learner or volunteer tutor can contact the program at 949-717-3874.
