A 22-year-old Newport Beach man is being held on suspicion of murder after a deadly attack in Stanton and a police chase that ended in a crash in Anaheim.

The suspect was booked at the Orange County Jail on Friday, Sept. 25, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said in a statement published by the Sierra Sun Times. The sheriff's department, which provides police services to Stanton, said deputies received several 911 calls around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24. Callers reported a man chasing another man with a knife near Beach Boulevard and Chapman Avenue.

Deputies arrived and found a man with serious injuries.

The victim was taken to a hospital and passed away there. The sheriff's department described the victim as having no fixed address but has not released an official cause of death.

Witnesses gave deputies a description of the suspect and the license plate number of the vehicle he left in, according to the sheriff's department. Using license plate reader technology, deputies located the suspect a short distance away.

OCSD Sgt. Gerard McCann told the Orange County Register that deputies followed the man and tried to pull him over, but he fled. The chase "started around Lincoln Avenue and East Street in Anaheim and ended at Lincoln Avenue and Anaheim Boulevard when the suspect rear-ended another vehicle," McCann said.

The suspect was taken into custody at the crash scene. He was being held at the Intake Release Center in Santa Ana as of Monday, Sept. 28, according to the Register.

No formal charges had been filed as of that date, and no court date has been announced. The Orange County Tribune reported that the victim suffered stab wounds, but the sheriff's department statement did not specify the nature of his injuries. The investigation remains open.

NBC Los Angeles reported a large police presence on Beach Boulevard near Chapman Avenue on the night of Sept. 24 as the investigation spanned two scenes in Stanton and Anaheim.
